A quantitative study based on a survey of novice designers resulted in identification of coordination roles within teams. A qualitative study based on interviews of industry experts found that proactive, empathetic leadership-based behaviors and more passive, authority-based behaviors are complementary approaches to facilitating coordination. First, what approaches and behaviors do individuals use to facilitate system-level coordination of distributed design work? This is answered with a pair of exploratory studies. This dissertation addresses two research questions. This research focuses on these individual communication behaviors and demonstrates their impact on system-level coordination. In this organizational context, coordination is primarily a communicative process focused on information sharing among parallel tasks. In a design organization, distributed tasks must be first partitioned so that they can be worked in parallel, and then coordinated so that the results can be joined together to effect the overall project goal. However, in actual system design, individuals are unlikely to coordinate by following algorithmic procedures. System design optimization algorithms are well-established for the coordination of analytical design problems. Sharing experiences from this course will aid faculty at other institutions wanting to include similar topics in their curriculum.Ĭoordination – ensuring interfacing groups are working with consistent data, interpretations of that data, and consistent goals – becomes necessary when design work is distributed or partitioned among different individuals or teams. As the pharmacy profession is constantly evolving, students need a strong foundation in management, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Evaluation: Student evaluations (n=214) show the course is well-received and provides opportunities to develop knowledge and skills not covered previously. The course in its current form has been offered four times to 541 students. Description of course: In this course, students learn concepts related to management, leadership, and entrepreneurship and complete assignments including financial statement exercises, human resources management simulations, personal leadership development plans, and business plan projects with professional poster presentations. To meet this need, the required course “Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Administration in Pharmacy” is provided as a culminating experience for pharmacy students. Given the critical need for women's leadership opportunities, this program shows promise as a means to strengthen women's leadership across career stages and disciplines.Ĭontext: Worldwide, there is growing interest in equipping pharmacy graduates with the requisite skills to assume responsibilities related to management and leadership in the profession. Further studies are needed to understand and measure how a program such as this can impact one's leader identity, self-awareness, and self-confidence. Themes that emerged in the survey findings point to the following program outcomes: participants gained an increased ability to identify and value one's own leadership strengths, an increased ability to recognize and value the strengths of others, and a supportive community of women leaders to share experiences and reflect on the application of their strengths as part of their leadership journey. Findings strongly suggest that most participants lacked the self-confidence and/or self-awareness to recognize their own strengths in a granular way prior to the program. Program outcomes and changes in participants' perceived confidence in identifying and applying their strengths in different contexts were evaluated through an online survey using a Likert-based REDCap survey tool after participation in the program. This paper shares the design and outcomes of a year-long strengths-based coaching program to support leadership development within the context of one university's women's leadership initiative. Strengths-based coaching has emerged in past decades as an asset-based approach that can help individuals identify, harness, and leverage their strengths to achieve professional and personal goals.
